Scrubbing My Brain

For the past two years I have been reading a lot of Super-Hero stories. While working on the Deadbeat I became fascinated by Silver age Super-hero stories, and what began as curiousity exploded into fascination. It started out okay, I read a lot of DC stuff all the way up to the 80's. I finally read Jack Kirby's Fourth World stories and was introduced to the stories of Elliot S. Maggin, both are some of the most rewarding reading experiences a comic fan can have. As a result of my job I have access to all of the recent mainstream releases, so, I began reading the new stuff. This was a mistake. Trying to be able to sell this stuff to people I inadvertantly filled my brain with horrid shit. Lots of it too. Then, when it came time to write another novel.... nothing came out. Well, shit did. Depression set in and I unknowingly kept reading the super stuff every Wednesday. Then the 'New 52' happened, dear God! It has become the 90's again, and I want out!! Don't get me wrong there are a few decent new titles, Animal Man has been enjoyable, but most started out promising (ACTION COMICS) and gradually spiralled into a snoozefest. Most of this is due to the talent not being able to keep up with the "stay on schedule" mandate from the executives who sweat nothing but the bottom line. Trying to capture that 'Collectors Dollar' mentality was what sent me kicking and cussing into the arms of alternative cartoonists way back when, so there I went again.

I took a cruise with my family this past week. Vacation means spending time in a car. Spending time in a car means I'm usually reading. I decided since work has begun on my new comic that I would go to the classics for inspiration. Sort of like how Orson Welles watched STAGECOACH a gazillion times before making CITIZEN KANE. I filled my backpack with some old favorites I hadn't read in a while and dove in.

I read SUMMER BLONDE by Adrian Tomine first:

Tomine has always been pretty polarizing. I have always enjoyed his stuff. The first comic I read of his was his 32 STORIES collection. Then I followed that up with his Drawn and Quarterly series. So, I've pretty much been exposed to his work in order of it's publication. SUMMER BLONDE collects the single issue stories of OPTIC NERVE he did before he tackled his first graphic novel SHORTCOMINGS. The story of which the volume is named is probably my favorite and concerns two neighbors and this blonde gal. Every one of the stories in this collection has that open ended finale that you either love or can't stand. I hate to say this but I think the fact his work is so accessable is the reason a lot of the sweater, horn rim glasses, beard crowd has turned on him.

The second book I read was JAR OF FOOLS by Jason Lutes:

I hadn't read this in ages. It holds up remarkably, it's the story of a magician dealing with losing his brother and lady friend while coming to terms with the fact that people in professions like his are becoming irrelevant. Kind of like being a cartoonist? This thing has great characters. His mentor who's increasingly becoming more senile is a gem. No one can do moment to moment like Lutes...I can't wait until he finishes BERLIN.

Yoshihiro Tatsumi's THE PUSH MAN AND OTHER STORIES followed:

Tatsumi is incredible. I've gone through all the stuff available to me at this point and I keep screaming 'TRANSLATE FASTER!!!' Being to lazy too learn Japanese, I'm at the mercy of Drawn and Quarterly. This is the first collection oh his shorter work, all from 1969, most of these stories have a page count of about 8....AND EVERY STORY KNOCKS ME ON MY ASS!!! I have to read a few at a time or my skull will split. He captures Post War Japan in a very quiet, human, matter of fact way that no matter what culture you belong to, whatever country you sit your ass in, you can feel this stuff in your guts. Something I definitely want to take (steal) from his work for my next outing is the sense of place. A DRIFTING LIFE comes highly recommended...shit, anything with his name on it does as well.

What blast from the past reading project would be complete without reading GHOST WORLD:

When I abandoned the mainstream ship in the 90's the three books that gave me a jolt were: LOVE AND ROCKETS, HATE and EIGHTBALL. Daniel Clowes hasn't really done a strip I haven't enjoyed...that's rare. Even the throw away gag stuff for EIGHTBALL he did was good. Something I enjoy about him too is the fact that all of his longer stories are so different as far as the subject matter and yet still recognizable as something he's done. Stanley Kubrick would be a film equivalent... Well, Clowes isn't that dry. He's a master of character and dialouge, nowhere is that more apparent than GHOST WORLD. I think my soft spot for this one may have something to do with that I was the same age as Enid and Becky when I read this book. Reading it again I was shocked at the page count....It's like 70 pages long. All that going on in what is probably his smallest page count. Hopefully, everyone's already read this...If you haven't then what's your excuse?

Finally, I NEVER LIKED YOU by Chester Brown.

...For this book. It's sparse as far as the line and dialouge go, It's scenes gradually unfold in this dreamlike way that are jarring yet familiar at the same time....It's my favorite comic EVER. I don't know why. It packs a punch like none other. Brown's best autobio stuff from Yummy Fur. I've read this so many times it's falling apart.
after finishing this again I have no desire to find out what happens to the Justice League.

My comrade Matt Smith who I did Bee Sting with is doing a series called Simon Says. He's using a different artist for each issue, and utilizing the seedy photos he stole from my safe, he's blackmailing me into doing the sixth issue. The series is set in the nineties and he wanted the covers for each issue to look like movie posters from that decade. Issue one had a Clerks homage. Mine is....Well, if you can't guess the movie I didn't do a very good job so, here you go.

A fella named Chad Lambert wrote this story called 'Bliss'. I have always wanted to do one of those process blogs. You know, how I do stuff. Well it all starts with a script. Mr. Lambert's was very clear and easy to follow. For you folks who have never seen a comic script it looks like this:

I take the script and do a really rough layout of what it's gonna look like. I always take the lettering into account. You have to have enough dead space to put the words. My layouts are REAAALLLLLY rough. Some people's are very refined. I don't really bother with them that much. Example:

Then I pencil from my rough. This to me is the most involved part of the art process. This is where you make sure all the figures are placed right, all the panels flow, nothing's confusing. I try to kind of make decisions on lighting and mood. Pencilling takes the most time out of all the steps. It makes your brain hurt sometimes, but the tighter you get it the easier the rest of the page will come. I use a simple mechanical pencil. I start off really light and refine and darken it as I go. I draw on 11x17 smooth bristol board. I usually scan the pencils in case i screw up during the inking process:

Then if everything is cool with the writer...Inking happens. I ink directly over my own pencils usually. If I ink someone else's stuff I usually roll with a light box. The ink i use is Windsor and Newton black waterproof india ink. It has a spider on the box. I use a combination of a number 2 and 3 brush, a croquill pen and of course to fill in large areas of spot black, a Q-tip. I usually do the foreground with the brushes and the background with the pens. I find this makes the foreground pop a bit more. Inking is my favorite part because if you bothered with pencils enough you don't have to think much about it...I find it very relaxing too. I'm not sure why.

Then I head over to the computer. I scan the page and open up ol' Photoshop. Photoshop is the most awesome thing that ever happened to comic book making folks. I usually mess around with the levels so my blacks are all black and my whites are as whit as the undies your mama used to bleach for you. I'm an Indie fella so usually most of the comics I do are in glorious black and white. I like throwing a flat gray tone on my pages. I'm not much on gradients or fancy stuff. i like just a flat 20% gray. I have a wacom tablet that I use to lay the gray down. It's pressure sensitive so it's a very natural and easy way to get some depth and extra shading.

Then, the final step is lettering. I do this two ways. If I'm doing something for myself, that I've written I letter by hand. You do this with an Ames Lettering guide and croquill pen. For this story I'm doing it digitally. This is certainly the more popular way to do it. I'm not sure how the pros do it but I go back to my friend photoshop. If you did your work and were anal in the layout and pencilling stage you should have plenty of room to put down your speech bubbles and boxes in a way that leads the reader's eye both through the panel and to the next panel.

That's all there is to it. You go on to the next page, finish the story then sit back and wait for the ten thousand dollar check to show up.......That last part was a lie. Honestly though none of us do this for the money. Being a doctor or lawyer would have been a better plan for that.

I'm working on my next graphic novel. I want to refine my process a bit, The Deadbeat was very 'Stream of Consiousness' as far as the writing went. I was making it up as i went along. With this new one I want to lay it out over and over until I'm satisfied. In preperation I've been doing a lot of sketches i did this one with my bamboo tablet. I don't draw with it ever, this is actually the first drawing I've done that is paper free. I went green on this one. Also in the news I'll be at SPX in a few weeks with brand new copies of BEE STING hot off the presses.

Free comic day at Comics Plus in Macon GA was a hell of an experience. We gave out a bunch of free Curse of Stranglehold/Bee Sting books and met some nice folks. After seeing my pages in the preview I decided to letter it digitally and gray it up. I think it looks drastically better.

In addition to Bee Sting I have also been working on a story for FUBAR vol 2. It's an anthology of zombie stories set in WWII. The first volume covered the European theater. Volume 2 is set in the pacific. I was given a script written by Mike Isenburg and Oliver Mertz. It was fun working from a script written by someone else. I got to do research and stuff too. I'll keep everyone posted on the release date. I finished all my pages...The time is 2:43am. Hooray.

I made a cover which will probably change when the final product is delivered. But check out that and this sample page. The whole thing is an ode to old slasher movies. The genesis of this thing happened when my wife and Matt started talking on Facebook about Friday the 13th part 5. The most hated entry in the franchise to many. My wife and I have always had a soft spot for that one because of how terrible it is. Terrible yet entertaining. Anyway....

I have a new mini comic coming out. It's a collection of 3 8 page stories about folks in the Appalachian Mountains. The stories are called "Cowboys and Indians", "Caw" and "Memorial Day". The first two were in anthologies, Cowboys and Indians has been out of print for a long time so I'm stoked about that. All of them beyond location are sort of thematically linked. I'll have it for the convention season. My first stop, is SPACE! March 19th and 20th.

Just wanted to share this. It amazes me the difference a little gray can make. Jason pencilled this thing. I inked it and then he ran it through his magic compu-machine (some thing called "photo shop'). Then you get a page that looks like it was in a comic printed on newsprint.......It's magic. Seriously though, I'm pretty amazed and happy to be involved in the process. I did my first book on my own, having someone else involved has certainly made Amateurs an exciting thing. Jason Rainey is a swell fella.

I've been thinking about these old characters I used. I've been thinking a lot about the area I'm from. After moving back I feel like I need to make some more comics about these characters...with a few additions to the cast of course. It's not going to be one story, there's too much to get in. The thing is it's not just about them, It's about the place they live in. I'm not sure what it's going to be. But I'm drawing it soon. It feels right. I feel like a phony going to these conventions and smiling at people like a used car salesman. It's going to be nice drawing comics again. I'm not even sure if the graphic novel format is going to be right for this thing. I've been reading a lot of the alternative comics I grew up with lately. Hate and stuff like that. I miss ongoing comics like that. We'll see what happens.

Well, after two lackluster conventions, as far as sales go, I'm a little beat. I plan on going to one more this year in Roanoke and that's it until Charlotte next year. This year I plan on doing lots of comics. That's it. Comics and taking care of Jr. who should arrive in February. My wife and I are expecting. I'll be thirty in a month or so. I feel weird. At the end of the month 'G2K Games The Comic' a work for hire book I did will be coming out. I'll also be in Shiot Crock this year. This year will also be 'Amateurs' year...God willing. I'm tired. I think I hate comic book conventions. I used to love them. I'd like to drop a nuclear warhead on San Diego Comic Con, and watch the red carpet and all the silly actors shilling bastardized versions of pulp paper heroes singe into ash. That would be beautiful. It would also take care of a lot of bullshit.

I have to cancel Wizard World Chicago. My wife and I are having a youngin, and we have to do some doctor stuff. I was a little sad at first, but then I took a closer look at the guest list. I saw Taylor Dane was going to be there. Question: Has anyone read any of the comics she's made. What about that latest epic, 12 issue mini-series written by Todd Bridges...No? I'm starting to think skipping anything to do with Wizard Magazine may be a good idea. If you're a 'Twilight' or Wrestling fan though their shitty conventions should be right up your street. I will be attending a convention in Myrtle Beach South Carolina, and a con in Roanoke to replace this one. If someone from 'Different Strokes' is the guest of honor though, I may have to reconsider. I can't compete with Gary Coleman! I'm just a cartoonist. All this makes me very depressed. Taylor Dane?

Rob Con in Bristol was a ton of fun. I sketched until my eyes were swollen and my hand was numb, I sold a bunch of books, and met some fine folks. Rob Con was the last stop on my journey to the comic book heart of darkness that was the Deadbeat tour of 2009. What a way to end it as well. Thanks to Robert Pilk and John Stone of Mountain Empire Comics for putting on a fun show. I visited a different place every weekend this month to hype the book...It's been a long month with the signings, work, and starting my next graphic novel. Of course the most memorable thing about this month has been getting news that I was going to be a daddy....Damn...Like I said hell of a month! Anyway thanks to everyone I met at the stores and at the conventions. I had a blast. I'm back on the road in August. My next stop...CHICAGO! The Heroes Convention was great fun. I sold a bunch of books and met some fine people. I got some awesome mini comics, I'm trying to complete my collection of Brad McGinty and Josh Latta comics. Funny guys to be sure. I also nearly completed my Kirby run of Machine Man, thanks to the various dollar bins. I love the Heroes con, my first time exhibiting was great. Fourth World

Hello, my name is Jeremy Massie, and I'm addicted to Jack Kirby's Fourth World books. Back in the early seventies Kirby jumped the Marvel ship, and went across town to work for DC. He started his Epic in an established book Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen. He then started up three new titles: The Forever People, The New Gods, and Mister Miracle...where he fleshed out his epic further. DC has released the 'Fourth World Omnibus' collecting these books in order of their release. I am addicted to this stuff!! I'm familiar with Kirby's Marvel work, but have never gotten into the DC stuff before. As far as early Marvel goes I was more of a Ditko fan. I liked Kirby but, Ditko was always more interesting to me. This Fourth World stufff has me hooked. I can't stop reading it...My social life is gone. My mind is blown. I want a boom tube so I can cut down on travel time.

My Favorite Book of 2008.

So, I've thought about it. My favorite book I read last year was Fuzz & Pluck: Splitsville by Ted Stearn. I really liked the first book and this new chapter in the lives of the plucked chicken and teddy bear duo really takes the story to a whole new level. Stearn was a teacher when I was majoring in comics at SCAD. My pals and I learned a lot from him, if you read this book you'll know why. It feels like an old animal strip from back in the day but the story structure sticks to the longer graphic novel format. Good stuff. Great characters. Anyhoo, it's worth the cover price for sure.

SPX was swell!

I had a wonderful time at SPX. I am just recovering from the trip. I met up with my pal Jason Rainey, who I haven't seen in five years. We read and talked comix, we ate at Popeye's and we chilled with 'The Deadbeat' who was spotted around SPX saturday. A young lady snapped the photo of him. I met a shitload of talented folks, I picked up the latest issue of 'Breathers,' Awesome. I also met the Alterna comics crew. Peter Semeti, the fella who is going to publish my book is a great guy, actually meeting him put all my fears to rest as far as getting this thing out. We seem to be on the same page. Anyhoo. I've never seen so many drunk cartoonists in one place. Coming back home was depressing. I felt like Harry Potter when he leaves Hogwarts and has to live with the Dursleys. Oh well, on to the next I suppose.

This is the cover for the final issue of the Deadbeat. I like it because it has pretty colors and it doesn't give away a damn thing about what happens during the grand finale. I'm pretty sure I'll be done in time for SPX. God willing... The whole story will be published in one neat graphic novel, by the good folks at Alterna comics. I signed a contract a month or so ago. It will be released early next year. I am happy.

I might have gotten word that someone wants to put my book out. I might have started drawing a page a day in excitement. I might be done by the end of the month. My eyes might be bleeding. I might die from an overdose of caffeine. Then again I might be full of shit.
